New Review - Ilya Odegov - Old Fazyl's Advice (WWB)

The latest addition to the website is my review of Kazakhstan author Ilya Odegov's short story, Old Fazyl's Advice.

Old Fazyl's Advice is a kind of inverted folk tale, a story where the advice given is utilised in exactly the opposite way it "should" be in order to achieve a goal very much against the wishes of poor Fazyl. The story is enough to make me curious about reading more of Odegov's stories in English, but it isn't, sadly, overly memorable.

You can read the review here.

Old Fazyl's Advice is a short story from the Words Without Borders September 2012 issue, Writing From the Silk Road.

New Review - Barlen Pyamootoo - Center of Flacq (WWB)

The latest addition to the website is my review of Mauritian author Barlen Pyamootoo's short story, Center of Flacq.

Center of Flacq portrays itself as a standard, rather average "foreign writer" kind of story, aimed at middle-class, white, English-speaking readers. This facade cracks rather quickly, and then shatters in the final sentence. And it's all rather wonderful, really.

You can read the review here.

Center of Flacq is a short story from the Words Without Borders May 2012 issue, Writing From the Indian Ocean.
